Why Do I Need NUCCA?

N.U.C.C.A. stands for National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association. It’s a specialty type of chiropractic that focuses on the neck, also known as upper cervical region of the spine.

Throughout life, we are subjected to different traumas that can injure our muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones. As a result of these injuries, our spine can misalign. One of the areas that are the most vulnerable and common to misalign is the top bone in the neck, otherwise known as the atlas bone. When it misaligns, it can place pressure on the central nervous system and be detrimental to one’s health.

Through the NUCCA technique, the misalignment is precisely and accurately measured to ensure the atlas will be restored to its natural position. This correction is made by a gentle and specific contact on the atlas. The pressure used is no more than taking one’s pulse. There is NO popping, twisting or cracking involved. Even though the correction is made on the top bone, it affects the entire body. For more information, visit: https://nucca.org/

FAQS

Who needs NUCCA care?

Anyone who wants their body to be functioning optimally. However, treatment is only given to those who have a measurable need for care. This is determined by a throughout physical examination and precise x-rays.

Is NUCCA safe for children?

Yes, the NUCCA technique is safe and gentle for people of all ages. We believe it’s better to grow a healthy spine rather than fix a broken one. Because of this, children tend to respond quicker and often need less visits than adult patients.

How long does the treatment take?

The healing process takes time. It often depends on the individual’s health history, how long their body has been in its misaligned state and most importantly, how they take care of themselves throughout care. Although the atlas bone is being corrected during the adjustment, healing depends on the surrounding tissues. This includes the muscles, ligaments and tendons holding that bone in place. The time it takes for these tissues to heal can take up to 12 months.

Why do I need to be checked when I feel fine?

Feeling fine is not equivalent to functioning fine. Only 12-15% of the nerves in your body sense pain. Out of that percentage, only a third can sense pain and discomfort. All the other nerves deal with conveying some other function/information to body parts.

Chiropractic isn’t just about relieving pain, but rather, restoring your body’s function back to 100%. By restoring normal alignment and function in the spine, we allow a more complete brain-body connection. When that happens you feel better, but more importantly you function better. Remember that just because you do not feel pain or discomfort does not mean there’s no nerve inference causing your body to malfunction.

How can adjustment to my neck affect my entire body?

The reason the NUCCA adjustment can affect the entire body is due to its close proximity to the brain stem. Within the brain stem are all of the body’s basic functions.

Through the restoration of normal alignment of the spine, we allow the body to regain its proper balance. This means less energy is needed to oppose gravity and more is given to functions like thinking, healing and maintaining yourself.

My pain is in my low back, not my neck. How can NUCCA help?

When the atlas bone is misaligned, it places pressure on the brain stem. When there is abnormal pressure on it, postural distortion occurs in one’s body. This typically presents with an uneven weight distribution throughout the entire body and as a result, muscles in the shoulders, hips and legs will be tightened to compensate for this imbalance. Pain often shows up in the area of the greatest breakdown. The NUCCA procedure helps restore proper function to the brain stem as well as posture, reducing stress throughout the entire body.
